“The only constant of my time at VIVA has been change”

Gary Blowers, Managing Partner

Hello again.

It’s true of life don’t you think? Everything changes, that Heraclitus  fellow reckoned so anyway. And he was a pioneer of wisdom.

Here at VIVA, change has been our focus for the past 12 months or so. The problem being that it’s everywhere, all around us. Constantly influencing what we do and when.

You could say change has been getting a little in the way of what we actually want to do. For the danger is that by constantly reacting to change, we are never really in control of our own destiny. But by defining a single vision for change, we realised we would be much more able to make the change we wanted to see.

If there’s one person in recent history that everyone can admire for his single minded vision to make change, this man could well be it.

For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

So we’re changing… It’s taken a good 12 months to get to this point and we’re not there yet. In fact we never will be, that little realisation has been part of the journey!

But having past our 5th birthday earlier this year, we’re itching to start showing the world we’ve taken hold of change – we’re starting to make the change we want to make – not the change others impose on us!

We’ll be revealing more about exactly what change looks like in the coming weeks and months, but one thing’s for sure; you guys are a crucial part of our change and we look forward to talking much more about what change might look like to you.

In leaving you, think again about what Jobs said. It’s easy to dismiss this as a moment of wisdom from a special guy. But we’ve learnt that special is something we can’t afford to hang around for. And that only by embracing and controlling change do we think we have the chance to be all we can be.
